Pediatric Dentistry FAQs

Starting early with preventive dental care helps your child build a strong foundation for lifelong oral health. At Monfredi Family Dental in Galloway, Ohio, we provide gentle, kid-friendly care designed to make dental visits comfortable and educational for you and your child. Our pediatric dentistry services include cleanings, exams, sealants, X-rays, and more, all aimed at preventing decay and encouraging healthy habits from the very first visit.

What happens during my child’s first visit to the dentist?

During your child's first dental visit, we make sure they feel safe and welcome. We'll review their dental and medical history, gently examine their teeth and gums, and discuss any questions you have about oral care. Our team will also show you and your child proper brushing and flossing techniques and set expectations for future visits. First visits are short but valuable for establishing comfort and trust in the dental office.

How often should my child visit the dentist?

We recommend that children visit the dentist every six months for routine cleanings and exams. Regular checkups help prevent cavities, monitor dental development, and ensure any concerns are caught early before they become bigger issues.

Why do I need to fix baby teeth?

Even though baby teeth eventually fall out, they are important for chewing, speaking, and maintaining space for adult teeth. Cavities and decay in baby teeth can lead to pain, infection, and problems with permanent teeth if left untreated.

At what age is it appropriate to use toothpaste to clean my child’s teeth?

As soon as your child's first tooth appears, you can begin using a tiny smear of fluoride toothpaste (about the size of a grain of rice). For older children (usually age 3 and up), a pea-sized amount of toothpaste is appropriate. Encourage your child to spit out the toothpaste and not swallow it.

Does my child need dental sealants?

Dental sealants are a protective coating applied to the chewing surfaces of teeth, especially back molars, where decay is most likely to develop. They create a barrier that helps keep food particles and bacteria out of deep grooves in the teeth. Sealants are typically recommended once permanent molars erupt, often between ages 6 and 12, to help prevent cavities in these cavity-prone years.

When should my child have dental X-rays taken?

Dental X-rays are taken periodically to help Dr. Monfredi monitor the development of your child's teeth and jaw, detect hidden decay, and ensure adult teeth are coming in properly. Because children's teeth grow and change quickly, X-rays are an important part of preventive care when recommended.

My kid loves candy. What can I do to protect his teeth?

Sugary treats can contribute to tooth decay, but you can still protect your child's smile! Encourage balanced meals, limit sticky or sugary snacks, and have your child drink water after sweets to rinse away sugars. Regular brushing and flossing, sealants, and twice-yearly visits to the dentist all help reduce the risk of cavities.
